ROXAS CITY, Capiz - Illegal gambling remains a persistent issue as confirmed by the Capiz Provincial Police Office (CPPO).
Despite efforts to combat it, illegal Small-Town Lottery (STL) bookies continue to operate in the province, leading to numerous apprehensions of bettors.
According to P/Col. Jerome Afuyog, Jr., Capiz provincial director, there were 29 cases filed in courts from January to May this year and 110 cases last year related to illegal gambling. This indicates the ongoing prevalence of the problem.
Reportedly, there are three financiers operating in Capiz, with one being a native of the province. However, one financier allegedly ceased operations due to apprehensions.
Afuyog refutes claims selective apprehensions, emphasizing the police's mandate to crack down on all forms of illegal gambling.
Unpaid Win
This highlights the risks associated with illegal gambling, where winners may not receive their rightful prizes.
One concerning incident involves a bettor who won but was not paid by the STL bookies.
In response, Afuyog advised the public to bet only on legal STL outlets to ensure that winnings can be claimed without issue.
Overall, the confirmation of illegal gambling in Capiz underscores the need for continued vigilance and enforcement measures to curb this unlawful activity and protect the welfare of the community.
