Hot Wheels lead designer Brendon Vetuskey expressed his excitement for the Filipino Collector Community as the Philippines hosted its first-ever Collectors Convention at Okada Manila over the weekend.

At an exclusive dinner with collectors at The Cove on Friday night, Vetuskey, who has been designing cars for Mattel since 2007, noted the impressive evolution of the event since his initial visit in 2019.

“It’s been an amazing observation of growth for the collectors. When I first came, the focus was primarily on families and kids. There was less emphasis on collectors, but upon my return last year for the Hot Wheels Legends, it was clear how the passion for Hot Wheels had grown significantly,” Vetuskey remarked.

Vetuskey has witnessed substantial development in the Philippine Diecast Community over the years.

This year’s Collectors Convention, which extends over several weeks at Okada, is the largest it has ever been, underscoring the deepening interest in Hot Wheels among local enthusiasts.

“This clearly shows there’s a growing passion and interest for vehicles in the Philippines. It’s incredible to see the community organize such an extensive event, reflecting their dedication and enthusiasm,” Vetuskey noted.

The designer’s dinner event was attended by 100 guests, including prominent members of the Diecast Car Collectors of the Philippines and other related organizations.

Fans from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia also traveled to Manila to join the festivities.

A ‘family’ affair

Vetuskey described Hot Wheels as a “family” that unites people from diverse backgrounds.

He drew parallels with conventions in the U.S., highlighting the sense of community and camaraderie among collectors.

“It’s truly a family affair,” he said. “Collectors bring their families, extend their visits, and engage in various activities together. The camaraderie and the shared passion for Hot Wheels create a strong sense of community.”

Encouraging further passion within the Filipino community, Vetuskey emphasized the love and creativity his team pours into their designs.

He sees the relationship with collectors as more than transactional; it’s a heartfelt exchange that enriches both the creators and the fans.

“Hot Wheels allows me to pursue my passion and share it with people. Seeing the excitement and appreciation at conventions is energizing and flattering. It’s an honor to see the community come together and celebrate their shared love for Hot Wheels,” he said.

Vetuskey will continue to engage with the Filipino Diecast Collectors Community throughout the convention, which runs until mid-September at Okada.

As the lead designer for the Red Line Club vehicles and a former lead designer for Monster Jam, he looks forward to interacting with both collectors and aspiring designers.
