A jewel of the Eastern Samar and a historical island, Homonhon, where Ferdinand Magellan, and his crew first set foot on Philippine soil is now facing a new, and potentially devastating threat.

Early in the morning, a massive fire engulfed a significant portion of the mountain that serves as the island's primary water source, leaving residents fearful and demanding an investigation, according to a report by a concerned citizen on September 18.

Locals are speculating that the fire was no accident and was most likely started by interested parties from the mining industry who had been bugged by the incessant call of the communities to protect the island.

“Mayda na naman hini nagkasusuhulan pero pareha man an una nahinanabo nga tigda nagkakasunog tapos an ira sasayupon magkarahoy, mag-uuring. Ebidensya gud ito nga pagtuyoa. Diri talaga masesereng nga aksidente. Man. Kitang-kita o,” said a resident showing Area Nine.

Homonhon, known for its pristine beaches and rich biodiversity, has long been a source of conflict between advocates of conservation and development.

While the island holds immense historical significance, its natural resources have attracted the attention of mining companies, leading to a constant struggle for its preservation.

The recent fire has heightened anxieties about the future of Homonhon as the residents rely heavily on the mountain's water supply for their daily needs, and its destruction could have dire consequences for their livelihoods and the island's ecosystem.

"Dapat na talaga maimbestigahan ini kay pirmi nala in nahitatabo nga mga sunog dinhi nga am kabukiran. Nanawagan kami hit mga nahitotongdan BFP (Bureau of Fire Protection), LGU Guiuan DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) imbestigahi tagad ini nga mga hitabo," a concerned resident said.

While the cause of the fire remains unidentified, the timing and location raise serious concerns about the potential role of mining operations.

The residents of Homonhon are demanding a thorough investigation, calling for accountability and protection of their island's irreplaceable natural resources.

Will the island's history and natural beauty be preserved, or will it succumb to the relentless march of development?
