Faster Internet Service for a "smART City" and improved education.

That was the pledge of San Pedro City Mayor Art Mercado as the city government officially turned over to its public schools new equipment that will greatly enhance their remote learning capabilities.

School heads from 28 public schools in the city formally received the Starlink Internet kits that are expected to bring faster Internet connection to these schools.

Aside from public elementary and high schools in the city, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) – San Pedro City campus and the San Pedro City Polytechnic College (SPCPC) also received new Starlink Internet kits.

This initiative is part of the city government's program under the Mercado administration to utilize technologies for better public service.

To recall, the city government also utilized Starlink technologies - which utilizes satellites to provide fast Internet connection - to better monitor and respond to various emergency situations at the new Command Center that was opened in Barangay Poblacion last March.

"Hindi na po tayo kakabahan sa tuwing kailangan po nating magsuspend ng face-to-face classes, dahil ready na ang ating mga public school para sa hybrid at distance learning," Mercado remarked during the turnover ceremonies.

The city mayor also expressed his gratitude to Data Lake Inc., the official distributor of Starlink technology in the Philippines, for being a partner of the city government in its drive to provide efficient services through technology.

‘smART education’

Aside from turning over the Internet kits, the city government will also assist in providing training to school teachers and staff on how to operate the new Starlink technology, Jhe-Rico Sam Colina, head of the San Pedro City Public Affairs and Information Office (PAIO) told OpinYon Laguna.

"Ang next in line po natin ay 'smART Education,' sa pakikipagtulungan po ng DepEd Schools Division Office ng San Pedro City,” Colina stressed.

As part of suich initiatives, the city government is expected to roll out its Learning Management System (LMS) for San Pedrense students, with the cooperation of the DepEd San Pedro SDS.

"Mayroon na rin po kaming plans to put up a library; waiting na lamang po kami for a signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education," Colina added.
