As the holiday season approaches, motorists in Iloilo have something to look forward to – the much-anticipated completion of the P591-million Hibao-an flyover in Barangay Hibao-an, Mandurriao district. Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, the officer-in-charge of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6, recently shared that the flyover is on track for opening on December 15.

Completing this infrastructural marvel is a significant milestone for the region, mainly as it aims to alleviate traffic congestion. The Hibao, a flyover stretching 240 meters along the Iloilo Circumferential Road (C-1), promises to enhance access to the southern part of Iloilo and the neighboring province of Antique.

The announcement of the flyover's imminent opening is met with enthusiasm, especially considering the challenges faced during its construction. Oropel highlighted the dedication of the project contractor, International Builders Corporation (IBC), and their commitment to working double time to meet the December deadline. The completion includes the installation of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Retaining Walls on both approaches of the flyover, a crucial aspect for ensuring safety.

However, Oropel also mentioned the hurdles encountered in the road widening underneath the flyover, emphasizing the resistance from some lot owners to sell their properties to the government. The process of acquiring the right of way is a crucial factor in determining the speed of road widening. Oropel assured that once the national government releases funds to expropriate lots, the DPWH-6 will expedite the road widening process.

The significance of the Hibao-an flyover goes beyond its physical structure. It symbolizes progress and development, addressing the increasing demands of a growing community. Former Senate President Franklin M. Drilon, who visited the flyover on October 19, expressed optimism about its impact on traffic congestion. Drilon stated, "You can see the traffic here before was terrible, and that is why we work for the funding of this project."

As we eagerly anticipate the opening of the Hibao-an flyover, it becomes not just a testament to engineering prowess but also a gift to the community – a smoother, more efficient journey for motorists just in time for the holidays. Completing this project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of government agencies, contractors, and local communities working together to improve transportation infrastructure.
