In observance of World Diabetes Day on November 14, Unilab Inc., a leading pharmaceutical and healthcare company in the Philippines, launched the Alagang Unilab Health and Wellness Fair in three areas in Pampanga.
These include the cities of Mabalacat and San Fernando and the town of Porac, where Unilab partnered with local executives and local health offices.
The fair aimed to provide medical services to residents with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes.
Around 500 participants attended each event, where they received essential medical services such as blood pressure checks, glucose level monitoring, eye check-ups, bone scanning, and nerve checks.
A key feature of the fair was an interactive lecture focused on raising awareness about hypertension and diabetes.
The session provided valuable insights on managing these conditions, understanding medications, and adopting healthier food and lifestyle choices.
In addition, attendees were encouraged to participate in various game booths and informational stations that offered an engaging way to learn about preventive health measures.
This initiative aimed to help people with long-term health conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, feel more supported in managing their conditions and taking better care of themselves and their families.
“Our goal is to foster a sense of community and provide essential healthcare services, especially for those managing chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Through initiatives like Alagang Unilab, we hope to empower Filipinos to take charge of their health and live fulfilling lives,” said Alexander Panlilio, Corporate Vice President for External Affairs and Social Partnership at Unilab.
Following the success of the Pampanga events, Unilab plans to expand the Alagang Unilab initiative nationwide as part of its 80th anniversary celebration next year.
Diabetes remains a significant health concern in the Philippines, with an estimated 6.8% of Filipinos affected.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 422 million people worldwide have diabetes.
Despite advancements in medical technology and healthcare access, diabetes and other NCDs continue to affect millions of Filipinos, placing a considerable burden on the country's healthcare system and economy.
Events like the Alagang Unilab fair raise awareness about preventive healthcare and provide strategies for managing these chronic conditions.
“Through this fair, Unilab reinforces the importance of community-based healthcare solutions, helping everyone learn more about their health. We believe that all Filipinos have the right to quality healthcare to live full and healthy lives,” Panlilio added.
