At only 29, Dr. Ea Kristine Clarisse Tulin-Escueta has already achieved what many scientists only dream of—a postdoctoral stint at Harvard Medical School, international training in Japan, and pioneering research in biochemistry.

But instead of pursuing a career abroad, she chose to come home to Leyte to serve and build a stronger future for science in the Philippines.

From Leyte to the World

Dr. Tulin-Escueta’s journey began in Visayas State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Chemistry.

Inspired by her scientist parents and driven by a deep interest in biological chemistry, she secured a scholarship to pursue graduate studies in Japan.

There, she earned both her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Biological Chemistry, specializing in glycoproteins and natural products.

Her academic journey later took her to Harvard Medical School for her postdoctoral training.

There, she worked under leading experts in glycobiology, developing monoclonal antibodies for use in diagnosing cancer, neurological disorders, and blood-related diseases.

A Calling to Come Home

Despite the opportunities that could have kept her abroad, Dr. Tulin-Escueta made the conscious decision to return to the Philippines.

Her vision: to help develop her home region as a hub for biotechnology and scientific innovation.

Now a faculty member at the Department of Biotechnology at Visayas State University, she is focused on building research programs that tackle local health and agricultural challenges.

Her return marks a significant milestone not only for her personal career but also for VSU, where she is the first graduate to complete postdoctoral training at a prestigious global institution like Harvard.

Teaching, Research, and Community Impact

Beyond research, Dr. Tulin-Escueta is passionate about education and mentorship.

She teaches biotechnology courses, advises student researchers, and engages in outreach activities that make science more accessible to young learners in rural areas.

Her work also includes studying plant-based antibacterial agents and developing tools that can improve diagnostics in resource-limited settings.

A creative at heart, she also integrates art into her approach to science communication, believing that creativity enhances how science is understood and appreciated.

Building the Future

Dr. Ea Kristine Clarisse Tulin-Escueta’s story is a powerful example of how global excellence can be redirected toward local transformation.

With a blend of expertise, heart, and vision, she is paving the way for a new generation of Filipino scientists who dream big but never forget where they came from.
