“Ang ganda ng Region 8,” Lormelyn E. Claudio of the Department of Natural Resources (DENR)-8 said on Tuesday in a press conference held in Tacloban City.

“The Philippines is abundantly rich in natural resources. We have this mandate on ensuring that there is harmony with nature. We call that the Sustainable Resource Use.”

“We are tasked to safeguard the ecosystems, including the forest, the water sources, the minerals, the coral reefs. And, of course, because everything outside our skin is the environment, there is a crucial need to understand the interconnections with the ecosystem,” she added.

Claudio highlighted the importance of Sustainable Resource Use in safeguarding the rich ecosystems in Eastern Visayas.

With a mandate to ensure harmony with nature, the DENR is dedicated to preserving the diverse ecosystems that make the Philippines abundantly rich in natural resources.

From forests to water sources, minerals to coral reefs, the DENR recognizes the interconnectedness of these resources and the environment.

Region 8, particularly, stands out for its wealth of resources, spanning from the majestic mountains to the stunning coral reefs in the sea.

Responsible Stewardship

In recent developments, the region has made significant strides by establishing the geospatial database office and the office of Integrated Environmental Science successfully.

These initiatives aim to enhance the understanding of the region's natural resources and promote sustainable practices for their preservation.

Claudio's emphasis on Sustainable Resource Use underscores the DENR's commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.

“We currently have seven legislated Protected Areas (PAs) in Eastern Visayas including the three Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and the four terrestrial PAs, Initial Components (ICs), and the Mount Nacolod Conservation Area (MNLCA) have been continuously protected, conserved and sustainably managed.”

By recognizing the beauty and value of the Philippines' natural wealth, coupled with strategic advancements in environmental science and data management, the country is poised to protect and sustain its precious resources for future generations.
