At the foot of the mystical Mount Banahaw, the town of Dolores, Quezon, once again ignited its collective spirit in the radiant celebration of the Hambujan Festival 2026.
This year’s festivities, set from April 7 to 11 at the Unlad Government Center, were more than a spectacle—they were a living chronicle of Doloresin whose faith, unity, and resilience have withstood the tides of nearly two centuries.
In each heartbeat, each splash of vibrant color, and every custom woven from the past, Dolores emerged as a community. Here, history and hope intertwined, shaping the daily lives of its residents.
Dolores Through Time: From Sitio Hambujan to a Town of Pilgrims
Founded in 1834 and given official status the following year, Dolores sprang from the rich soils of Tayabas and Batangas. It found its place close to what is now Barangay Sta. Lucia.
Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, as it was once called, became a sanctuary of faith and a place where the land yielded its bounty. The customs the townspeople cherish have, over time, molded the town's identity, influencing both its physical landscape and the spiritual lives of its inhabitants.
Their pilgrimage takes them to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows. They join in the "Turumba," a rhythmic act of devotion, and offer their respects on Fridays during "Viernes de Dolores." These, along with countless other rituals, beautifully blend the sacred with the communal.
The Hambujan Festival is built on this enduring legacy. "Hambujan," the very name, hints at a fusion of welcome and cleansing, a reflection of the essence of community.
Every April, Dolores reaffirms its commitment to embracing new blessings by releasing the weight of the past.
This is embodied in the Hambuhan ritual, a ceremony led by Mayor Orlan Calayag, who personally guides the community through this significant event.
"Alam naman po natin ang sitwasyon ngayon—nagtipid tayo, inalis natin ang mga banda, and simple lamang ang ating paghahanda dahil limitado ang ating budget and resources. But the outcome? Maganda pa rin! Sobrang tagumpay," Mayor Orlan said in an exclusive interview of Opinyon Quezonin.
Despite these challenges and adjustments, the spirit of the celebration remained undiminished.
"Sa street dancing na ito, kitang-kita natin ang talento, dedikasyon, at pagkakaisa ng mga taga-Dolores. From a young age, children are taught the value of hard work and cooperation—this is the true mark of Dolores residents. And in everything we do, we always put our Lord first. That's something we will never lose sight of," the mayor continues.
A Theme That Connects Generations
With the festival's theme, "One Hundred Ninety-One Years of Foundation: History and Culture, Guiding the Doloresin Family in Progress and Unity," the town celebrated not just its 191st founding anniversary, but also the vibrant culture that continues to guide every Doloresin family toward advancement.
Festival Pulse: Dance, Innovation, and Community in Action
The festival's energy surged through the vibrant Street and Ritual Dance Competition.
Young dancers brought narratives to life, turning costumes into living history and every movement into a statement of cultural pride.
But Hambujan 2026 offered more than just ritual and dance. It was a meeting point for the old and the new. The town welcomed its inaugural Mobile Legends Tournament, connecting different age groups through digital play.
Simultaneously, it brought together emerging artists in a spontaneous painting contest, which beautifully captured the colors and aspirations of Dolores.
Motor and car shows, a bustling banquet food fair, the creative showdown of the Arko contest, and the laughter-filled Color Fun Run all stitched together a festival rich in both heritage and modern joy.
Moments of Triumph
Each moment, every competition, and every shared meal served as a celebration of Dolores's resilient spirit. The town thrummed with a vibrant energy, a mix of its storied past and the possibilities ahead. As the festival's music faded, a resilient community remained, bound together, brimming with optimism, and undeniably Dolores.
The event's triumph, in the end, speaks volumes about Dolores' tenacity and the strength of its community. Despite facing constraints, the people's solidarity and unwavering belief are evident, demonstrating that genuine joy springs from within.
