Despite suffering a finger injury during his training camp, Carlos Yulo is as ready as ever for the upcoming World Championships in Liverpool starting on October 29.
Carlos Yulo admits hardship in preparing for the upcoming 41st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships set to happen on October 29 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England, following a finger injury during his training in Japan.
Yulo is finishing his training camp in Paris, and according to his coach Mune Kugumiya, their team will fly to Liverpool on Tuesday.
"Wala akong kaba. Di naman ako natakot. Siguro, sa practice lang talaga nagkakatalo," said the gymnast in an online press conference.
He revealed that the injury did not bother him when he trained for floor and vault, a good sign for him and his mentor as they are aiming for multiple podium finishes.
"Sa mga ibang apparatuses nakabalik naman ako agad—sa floor and vault ang pinaka nagawa ko," said Yulo, the 2019 floor champ and 2021 vault champ.
The 4-foot-11 gymnast is gunning for a top 6 finish in the difficult men’s all-around event and even a top spot in floor exercise, vault and parallel bars in the World Championships.
“Gusto ko po maka-top 6 sa all-around tapos tatlong gold na sinalihan ko po sa mga nakaraang world championships na naging maganda ang aking laro,” Yulo also said in the online press conference, concluding his five days of training at the INSEP training center on the outskirts of Paris, France.
Yulo has high expectations for himself in floor exercise, vault and parallel bars, after being successful in the previous editions of the meet held in Stuttgart, Germany and Kitakyushu, Japan in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
Despite the Liverpool World Meet not being counted as a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Yulo and his team will use this chance to polish his skills against the best of the best artistic gymnasts.
Tournaments for Paris qualification will begin early next year, February 2023, with Yulo participating in at least four tournaments.
