In the midst of the recent political turmoil stemming from Mayor Trenas's endorsement of his daughter for the Congressional seat in the Lone district of Iloilo, Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. has offered his perspective on the matter. Addressing queries from the media regarding the possibility of a party rift or discord among leaders in the province of Iloilo leading up to the anticipated 2025 elections, Governor Defensor stated, "In the province, we have no talks of a break-up."
According to Defensor, there is effective cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of the Iloilo provincial government, as well as with the mayors throughout the province of Iloilo. Furthermore, there is no expectation of a split within the province because they do not belong to the same political party as Vice Governor Christine Garin.
Defensor is a member of the Federal Party of the Philippines – the political party of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., while Vice Governor Garin is affiliated with the Nacionalista Party. Defensor has declared his intention to seek reelection for his last term as governor in the 2025 elections, while Garin's term as vice governor is coming to an end, making her eligible to run for governor.
During the 2022 elections, despite not being from the same political party, Defensor and Garin united and supported each other.
