June is Pride Month.
Meaning, gays, lesbians, transgenders, AC/DC advocates, bisexuals, transgenders and other members of the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transexuals, Queers, Intersex, Asexuals + (questioning etc.) or the LGBTQIA+ are celebrating the occasion of being proud as one.
In the spirit of the season, there are a lot of activities being done not only in the Philippines but worldwide as well to pay tribute to this matrix of sexual orientations.
One of them is through the moving images of film.
I was lucky to have been invited to watch the special preview of "10s Across the Borders," a documentary film on voguing not only by the LGBTQIA+ community but the hetero demographics as well.
The screening was held at the ScreenX of the Mall of Asia (MOA).
What is voguing?
Voguing is contemporary ballroom scenario, however underground, where participants perform movements like imitating exaggeratedly and stylizing the body acts of Vogue Magazine models like sashaying at the runway or dipping one's body on the floor with bizarre and ornate outfits and strut moves.
The protagonists of "10s Across Borders" are Xyza Mizrahi, a Filipina, Teddy Oricci, a Malaysian and Aurora Sun Labeija, a Thai, the last two being gats.
These three characters illustrate the love, freedom and filial piety they achieve through voguing no matter the misunderstanding they get from society.
Voguing started in New York City in the seventies and eighties.
