After some forgettable outcomes from recent tournaments, Gilas Pilipinas now ranks No. 41 in the Fiba World Rankings, and is now No. 8 in Asia

Gilas Pilipinas has slid down to the 41st slot in the new Fiba World Rankings after the governing body for basketball has released its latest rankings following the fourth window of the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and other continental tournaments on Monday, September 26.

The dip of eight notches in the standings is just a few spots higher than its lowest standing a decade ago when it was placed No. 45 on the global rankings.

Gilas’ downfall started when the squad suffered beatings from New Zealand that included a 46-point loss in their second meeting last June 30.

The Philippines then played their worst campaign in recent history after placing 9th in the 2022 Fiba Asia Cup, failing to advance to the quarterfinals of the continental tournament.

Previously ranked 33rd in the world, the Gilas Pilipinas suffered the third-biggest fall in the continental race after Qatar (14 spots to No. 90) and Hong Kong (11 spots to No. 123).

Lebanon is among the biggest climbers in the region, climbing 10 spots higher to become No. 9 in Asia.

The Philippines now ranks eighth in Asia-Pacific behind No. 3 Australia, No. 21 Iran, No. 24 New Zealand, No. 27 China, No. 34 Korea, No. 35 Jordan, and No. 38 Japan.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ category, the Philippines is still climbing up the ladder, rising seven places to world No. 24 after finishing in seventh place during the under-16 competition and in sixth place in under-18.

Gilas Boys are now ranked fourth in Asia, behind Australia at eighth, China at 21st and Chinese-Taipei at 22nd.

According to Fiba, performances in the Asia Cup, AmeriCup, and EuroBasket, as well as the last two windows of the World Cup qualifiers were reflected in this edition of the standings.
