Music has been part of our everyday lives no matter the season, and no matter the celebration.

In these fast-moving and interchanging technologies, one trend has been blossoming in the hearts of Filipino youth– the support for local music and indie artists.

The playlists are now, not limited to foreign music or pop artists from other countries. Instead, a place for sariling atin music has been well-fitted in their hearts, especially the crafts from independent artists or “indie artists.”

New sounds, new generation

Indie artists are known for their unique tones and original styles which differ from mainstream music.

Some of these artists do not belong to big record labels nor have exposure from radio, instead, they get the attention of listeners who are looking for new, realistic, and significant music.

Oftentimes, they produced songs that contain deep messages if not cryptic– from tackling societal issues, and personal experiences, up to sentiments that are not highlighted in popular culture.

Internet and social media became bridges to introduce indie artists to a wider audience.

With the use of platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, TikTok, and many more, chances were given to singer-songwriters to let their art be heard by the people who really understood their music and gave importance to it.

Role of social media

Most of the local talents are discovered from social media, making it one of the prominent gold mines for talented artists.

In just a snap of a finger, one song can go viral all over TikTok or even make a trend on X (formerly Twitter), which gave the spotlight to indie artists.

We can say that it isn’t just a simple platform for communication anymore, but a powerful tool to disseminate culture and arts.

Despite the limited resources, indie artists still manage to make significant marks through their exceptionable branding and connection to listeners.

These artists usually interact directly with their audiences which creates a whole new personal connection that is not usually the case for mainstream artists.

Our very own

Support for local music is not just a simple support for art but it is an attestation of recognition and giving pride to our very own culture. Every lyric of songs that we enjoy, is a symbol that culture is important as well as the stories we are yet to hear.

The continuous support of Gen Zs to local music and indie artists shows the change of benchmark in quality and meaningful music.

This current bracing of Filipino youth for this is proof of an extensive connection between cultures and provides us hope that our very own local music will never cease despite globalization.

The notes of the indie music industry that these youth are patronizing are not only meant to make Pinoy melodies thrive but also give a new face to the history of music in the Philippines.

Music will surely evolve, but one thing is for sure –the love for our very own is something that will acoustically carry on and give inspiration to the next generation of musikerong Filipino.
