San Pedrense motorists, brace yourselves: heavy traffic is coming this February.

This, as the bridge spanning the National Highway between the boundaries of San Pedro City, Laguna and Muntinlupa City is now slated for a major rehabilitation project.

In separate announcements posted on their social media pages Tuesday, January 13, the city governments of San Pedro and Muntinlupa said that the major repair works for the bridge is set to commence February 1 (Sunday).

The rehabilitation of the Tunasan-San Pedro bridge is a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – National Capital Region under the initiative of Muntinlupa City Representative Jaime Fresnedi.

Alternate routes

Starting February 1, a “stop-and-go” scheme will be implemented along the area of the Tunasan-San Pedro bridge, while only light vehicles will be allowed to pass through to Muntinlupa City.

Six-wheeler vehicles, including buses and trucks, are advised to use the following alternate routes:

  • For vehicles coming from San Pedro City, turn left at Magsaysay Road to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) San Pedro northbound exit; the u-turn slot at the foot of the Magsaysay Road Bridge will be temporarily closed.
  • For vehicles coming from Manila, exit at the SLEX San Pedro northbound exit and turn right at Magsaysay Road, passing through Father Masi Street (Holiday Homes) and United San Pedro Subdivision (USPS) to National Highway.

Commuters are advised to wait for announcements from bus companies passing through San Pedro City for changes in their routes.

The city governments of San Pedro and Muntinlupa are also expected to allot additional alternate routes to ease the expected traffic congestion along the National Highway.

The Tunasan-San Pedro bridge is located near the Magsaysay Road – Mabini Street intersection, a major junction for vehicles going to the industrial complexes of San Pedro City as well as the city proper.

The area near the bridge has also been the center of attention by historians and heritage enthusiasts due to two boundary markers that antedate Muntinlupa City’s annexation to the National Capital Region in 1975, showing the city being once part of Rizal province.
