Cinema houses are one of the few places senior citizens in the Philippines can spend their time with.
Despite the rise of online streaming, cinemas are still the preferred place of most senior citizens not only to relax but also to interact with family and friends.
So it was a big deal for senior citizens of Calamba City, Laguna that they can now avail themselves of free movie tickets, thanks to a landmark program by the city government.
Calamba City, Laguna Mayor Roseller "Ross" Rizal launched last December 27, 2024 the "Libreng Sine Para sa Senior Citizens" at the Jose Rizal Coliseum, coinciding with the golden anniversary of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Starting January 8, 2025, senior citizens in Calamba City can watch free movies at SM City Calamba upon presenting a valid Senior Citizen ID and a "Libreng Sine" booklet issued by the local government.
Each senior citizen may watch films up to two times per month, from Monday to Friday, and is limited to 2D movie screenings.
Meanwhile, Rizal also announced plans for a local social pension program for the city's senior citizens, to be implemented this year.
