Soon on Iloilo: cashless buses, e-trikes, more trisikads, and bikes.

THE provincial government of Iloilo received 25 e-trikes and 10 units of “cashless buses”- the first of their kind outside Metro Manila.

Department of Transportation Secretary Art Tugade turned over the vehicles to Iloilo Lone District Cong. Jam Baronda on Monday, November 8.

According to the congresswoman, DOTr has actively been reaching out to help the province even before the pandemic.

“DOTr has helped us ferry both repatriates and relief goods especially during the enhanced community quarantine, rehabilitate our port, and built a new Coast Guard headquarters,” Baronda said.

The congresswoman was pertaining to the recently inaugurated new Coast Guard District Western Visayas Headquarters in Iloilo City.

As for the 25 units of e-trikes, Tugade hopes that Iloilo’s workforce will be able to make use of the new vehicles when traveling to and from work.

“Makatutulong din ito sa pagtitiyak ng kalusugan at kaligtasan ng mga road users - ang mga siklista at riders, para sa kanilang biyahe at hanapbuhay,” Tugade wrote on his Facebook page.

The buses, meanwhile, are set to ply routes from Iloilo to Caticlan, Roxas, and Kalibo.

“Dahil cashless na ang pagbabayad, malaki ang maitutulong nito para maiwasan ang hawaan sa Covid-19,” he added.

Additionally, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) distributed 75 trisikads and 38 bikes to Ilonggos through its various livelihood projects.

Said to be a model example of a commuter-friendly city, Iloilo was first introduced to the modern public utility vehicles in 2018 when Metro Express Connect Inc. (MCI) brought 15 units of modern jeepneys.
