Filipino lawyer shot dead on his way to the airport in Philadelphia
John Albert Laylo, 36, a Filipino lawyer was shot dead in the head on Sunday while riding an Uber on his way to the airport after ending his vacation with his mother in Philadelphia, according to local police and social media posts from family.
Laylo was sitting with his mother, Leah Bustamante, in a black Nissan Altima, traveling southbound on 38th Street at Spruce Street, around 4:10 a.m. Saturday when a vehicle came up from behind "and started to fire several rounds" into the Altima, police said.
The vehicle was reported as a black Maxima, which pulled up along the driver’s side and fired endlessly, eventually delivering the fatal shot in the head.
According to the victim's mother Leah Bustamante Laylo, John died early Monday morning (Philippine time).
"I thank God for the 35 years of his life. I'm beyond grateful for having a good, smart, generous, loving, caring son. These are the adjectives I can think of now. I'm lost of words!" Leah said on Facebook.
"I can't explain the pain, the heaviness I have in my heart. It took me hours to post this because still I can’t believe this happened!" Leah added
Bustamante sustained minor injuries following the shooting and is now stable but John was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital, unfortunately pronounced brain-dead hours after the incident.
"Before we left he made sure we had fun! But never did I imagine or dream that the almost end of our vacation will be like this! We travelled together and we are supposed to go home together! I will bring him home soon in a box!" Leah continued.
Laylo was associate partner at DB Law Partnership from 2015 to 2016 and a supervising legislative lawyer in the Senate from 2016 to 2018.
In the 2022 general elections, he served as the official counsel of outgoing Vice President Leni Robredo in the board of canvassers for Makati City.
