Dr. Mankumbo Swaminathan, a well-loved director general of the International Rice Research Institute from 1982 to 1988 and regarded as father of India’s green revolution, died Thursday, September 28. He was 98 years old.
Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, the President’s father, signed Executive Order 1061 establishing the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) on November 5, 1985 after Swaminathan pushed for its creation.
In 1971, he was bestowed the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership. A Time Magazine review cited Swaminathan as one of the most influential people in Asia.
A statement from the IRRI Director General’s office said “it is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a visionary leader, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, former Director General of IRRI. Dr. Swaminathan's contributions to the field of agricultural research and his dedicated service to IRRI have left an indelible mark on our organization and the global community.”
“Dr. Swaminathan's legacy continues to shape our mission to this day. His dedication to fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable agricultural practices has set the standard for excellence within our organization,” the IRRI said.
"As we mourn the loss of a great leader and scientist, let us also celebrate his remarkable life and the positive influence he had on IRRI and the global community. We will explore with his family and foundation opportunities to honor his memory and reflect on his enduring contributions," the statement said.
"Our thoughts and condolences go out to Dr. Swaminathan's family during this difficult time. May we all find solace in remembering the profound impact he made on our institute and the world."
Agriculture Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian for Rice Industry Development noted the great contribution of Dr. Swaminathan and the late Senator Edgardo Angara (then the President of the UP System) in the formation of the PhilRice.
