The new RFID scanners installed on NLEX and SCTEX can detect up to three vehicles in advance to identify, record, and process the transactions faster.

LONG lines of vehicles on North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) or Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) toll plazas are now a thing of the past after the installation of new scanners and realigned antennas.

That is according to the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, which recently completed their upgrade project for NLEX and SCTEX that could detect vehicle radio frequency identification or RFID tags better.

The project follows the reported inefficiencies with the Easytrip system that include glitches with the scanning equipment causing long lines at toll plazas.

“Part of our commitment to our customers is to consistently improve our electronic systems and services, providing them with a better experience each time they travel,” said J. Luigi L. Bautista, president, and general manager of NLEX Corporation.
“Together with the entire Metro Pacific Tollways (MPTC) group, we have made major improvements in our RFID system, ensuring that these systems are updated, and the right processes are in place,” he said.

As it is, 188 toll lanes are now equipped with RFID early detection systems to reduce the processing of entry lane data from four hours to almost real-time.

He added the new RFID scanners can detect up to three vehicles in advance to identify, record, and process the transactions faster.

Additionally, in case of antenna failure, divers can tap their Easytrip cards on terminals installed in each lane to complete the transaction.

Toll plaza personnel are also equipped with handheld scanners for use when backup is necessary.

“We envision that soon, our goal of having 100% cashless transactions in all expressways will become a reality,” said Alvin Carullo, Executive Director of the Toll Regulatory Board.
