The recent tragedy in Maasin, Iloilo, where Maricar's 16-year-old son, known as "Ulong-Ulong," took his own life, has deeply saddened our community. It's a stark reminder of the immense pressure our children face in their academic journey.

Ulong-Ulong's story highlights the harsh realities of a grading system that overlooks the unique challenges students like him may encounter. His family's financial struggles made it impossible for him to complete a class project, adding to the stress of trying to excel in school.

The teacher's insistence on an unattainable project reflects the inequalities embedded in our education system. It's crucial to acknowledge and address the diverse circumstances students may face, rather than imposing one-size-fits-all expectations.

Maricar's concern for her son's mental health underscores the importance of prioritizing well-being in our schools and communities. Too often, signs of distress are overlooked until it's too late.

As we mourn Ulong-Ulong's loss, we must reflect on our collective responsibility to prevent similar tragedies.

We need reforms that prioritize students' overall well-being over academic achievements. Teachers must be equipped to support students emotionally and mentally, and as a society, we must foster a culture of empathy and acceptance.

Though Ulong-Ulong's dreams remain unfulfilled, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for change.

Let's honor his memory by creating a safer, more compassionate educational environment for all children.
