On June 29-30, Guimaras is hosting the 3rd leg of the International Open Water Swim Circuit at Taklong Island National Marine Reserve (TINMAR). This marine sanctuary, protected since 1990, spans 1,143 hectares, including Taklong and Tandog islands and nearby islets in Nueva Valencia.
TINMAR is home to diverse marine life—from coral reefs and mangroves to seagrass beds and deep-water habitats. Its significance extends beyond biodiversity; it shelters various bird species in its mangrove forests.
Despite challenges like the 2006 Solar 1 oil spill, which devastated local ecosystems, TINMAR has shown remarkable recovery. Large-scale mangrove rehabilitation efforts, backed by government and community support, have revived its natural habitats.
Today, TINMAR exemplifies resilience and sustainable eco-tourism. It continues thriving amidst environmental challenges, inviting visitors to experience its vibrant biodiversity.
Explore Taklong Island's marine ecosystem—a journey that offers both education and appreciation for nature's enduring strength.
