The controversy surrounding the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte has intensified following reports that several lawmakers were allegedly withdrawing their support for the impeachment complaint.

Among the names circulated online were legislators from Eastern Visayas, a politically strategic region closely allied with the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

One of the most prominent names linked to the alleged withdrawal was Anna Victoria Veloso-Tuazon of Leyte’s third district.

Veloso-Tuazon publicly denied reports that she had withdrawn her support for the impeachment complaint, calling the circulating claims misleading and false.

Veloso- Tuazon is the daughter of Vicente “Ching” Veloso III who built his reputation as a lawyer and politician in Leyte before becoming an associate justice of the Court of Appeals.

The impeachment complaint against Duterte stems from allegations involving the misuse of confidential and intelligence funds during her tenure as Vice President and former education secretary.

Lawmakers backing the complaint argue that the issue goes beyond politics and centers on constitutional accountability, transparency, and public trust. The complaint also references alleged unexplained wealth and accusations tied to threats against President Marcos Jr. and Speaker Romualdez.

The political significance of Eastern Visayas in the impeachment process cannot be overstated. The region is considered one of the strongest political bailiwicks of Romualdez, whose influence within the House of Representatives has been crucial in consolidating support for the impeachment effort.

Because of this, reports suggesting that Eastern Visayas lawmakers were retreating from their support carried symbolic weight. If true, such withdrawals could have signaled weakening support within the administration coalition itself.

However, the denials and conflicting accounts also reveal another dimension of the controversy: the growing role of digital disinformation in Philippine politics.

Analysts note that social media has become a battleground where competing political camps attempt to shape public perception before formal congressional proceedings even unfold.

Lists of alleged withdrawals, many of which lacked official House documentation, circulated widely online and were amplified by Duterte supporters seeking to portray the impeachment as collapsing from within.

At its core, the impeachment battle reflects a larger power struggle between the Marcos and Duterte political camps ahead of the 2028 elections.

Although framed legally as a constitutional process, it has increasingly become a contest over political survival, influence, and control of the ruling coalition.

For Eastern Visayas solons, every public stance carries major implications not only for governance but also for future political alliances in a rapidly shifting national landscape.
