The British Council, a global leader in English language education, has unveiled groundbreaking research titled “The Future of English: Global Perspectives,” examining how English will adapt to global trends such as digital advancements and international mobility.

This comprehensive study represents the latest phase in the British Council’s ongoing research efforts.

It analyzes the role of English across the world and aims to empower policymakers and stakeholders by providing a nuanced understanding of the current English language landscape, helping them anticipate and address learners' evolving needs.

The research process included a series of roundtable discussions with 92 policymakers and experts from 49 countries, spanning fields like applied linguistics, assessment, and education.

The findings are especially relevant for the Philippines, with recommendations that emphasize preserving cultural richness through multilingualism while carefully introducing English in education to prevent hindering learning outcomes.

The study further highlights the potential of technology to enhance teaching and assessment, underscoring the need for accessible resources for Filipino learners and educators.

It also recommends integrating intercultural studies alongside academic subjects to enrich language learning, as well as preparing teachers to deliver a multilingual curriculum effectively.

“At the British Council, we are committed to providing data-driven insights like the ‘Future of English’ study, which are essential for shaping the future. Through comprehensive analysis, we aim to give policymakers and practitioners a clear understanding of current trends and emerging needs. These insights are designed to support informed decision-making, contributing to reform initiatives such as EDCOM 2 and aligning with the goals of the Philippine Development Plan. We strive to be a valuable resource in fostering a forward-looking, responsive education system,” Lotus Postrado, Country Director of British Council Philippines, remarked.

The future of English in the Philippines will be shaped by its global evolution.

As English continues to grow as a global language, it must evolve to drive accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity across the region and beyond.
