Here we are, still not over from the unexpected results of one of the quickest (in terms of counting the votes) elections the country has seen in decades.

Victors are basking in their wins, losers are trying to make sense of what happened – with some, apparently, having moved on quickly from their defeat.

Of course, it goes without saying that the victory of winning the people’s trust will soon be replaced with the realities of politics and governance.

As a famous Broadway musical once succinctly put it, “Winning was easy, governing is harder.”

Winners in this year’s elections should prepare themselves to confront the realities of governing their provinces, towns or cities.

There’s no denying that despite the glowing statistics painted by the government in recent months – declining inflation rates, steady economic growth, reduced unemployment –the dream of a better life remains elusive for many of our kababayans.

Not to mention the fact that some winners will have to contend with the realities of both national and local politics.

While it’s been seen in this election that political dynamics in the local and national front can sometimes be at odds, there’s no doubt that the looming 2028 presidential election will be the main focus of the maneuvering and behind-the-scenes tactics of politicians and political machinery, even this early.

The challenge now is for our new leaders to “sit down and get cracking” if they are to maintain the trust that their voters have given to them last May 12, all the way to the next polls.
