Echo Laure commits to the UST Tigers after spending the last year in the States to build on his game in preparation for UAAP.
Second-generation standout Echo Laure confirmed his commitment to play for the University of Santo Tomas living up the family ties with the school, according to sportswriter Naveen Ganglani.
The 19-year-old cager is the son of former PBA player Eddie Laure and the younger brother of UST women’s volleyball stars EJ and Eya Laure.
“One of many primary explanation why I dedicated to UST is the household ties to the college. I noticed how they took care of my older sisters after they had been there and the way the UST neighborhood treats its athletes,” Laure stated.
The 6-foot-5 has spent the last year in the United States, training for his debut in the UAAP Season 85, and is set to come home to the Philippines this August just in time for the new season.
However, the young cager from National University clarified that even if the commitment is just a verbal one, he is planning to make it official once he returns.
“For me, verbal or signed, a commitment is still a commitment and I hope to honor it and give my all for the UST community and to Father Rodel Cansancio for giving me an opportunity to play for such a prestigious school,” he said.
He admitted that other colleges were pursuing him but UST “felt like home” for him as he also played for the UST Tiger Cubs before transferring to NU.
While Echo was staying in the US, he was forced to build his outside game as he was more of a slasher when he was playing Philippine high school basketball.
“It’s been actually nice thus far, enjoying in tournaments right here actually confirmed me how completely different Philippine basketball and American basketball are physicality-wise and talent smart, too,” he stated of his experience as he focused on a different aspect his skills such as his agility, speed, and strength to play either of the forward positions in college hoops.
