Monorails and trams could very well supplement and complement the existing rail systems currently operating in the National Capital Region.

Such modes of transport, once completed, can ease traffic snarls in the restrictive road networks and provide a relief and easy commute for hapless commuters who have long suffered from a poor public transport system.

The pitch of Rep. Joel Chua (Manila, 3rd District that covers Binondo, Quiapo, San Nicolas and Sta. Cruz-- site of Manila busiest business, religious and schools and universities) for monorails and trams as mass transit option is appropriate and relevant considering the inadequacies of public transport in the capital region.

The routes he pitches include Quiapo via Espana to Quezon Memorial Circle; Roxas Boulevard tramway; Manila to Santa Rosa LRT, C-5 MRT, Skyway MRT.

In a press statement on January 29, Chua said that in addition to the MRT-7, MRT-4, and Metro Manila Subway, "there should be more light rail lines to make commutes easier and affordable for everyone from the poor to the rich in the Greater Manila area."

"I want to emphasize that the effective solution to the horrendous traffic in the Philippines is efficient mass transportation. An efficient mass transport system means delivering the highest number of passengers from point A to point B in the fastest, most convenient, and most cost-effective way," Chua explained.

"In my opinion, the most effective mass land transport system is the train. If we can provide our citizens with a proper monorail or light rail system, the need to bring a car will decrease. Why would you bring a car when it's faster and more convenient to take the train?" The advantages include cheaper fare, no expenses on gasoline and parking fees. That is the true solution to ease traffic in Metro-Manila," the solon, who is also vice chair of the House Committee on Metro Manila, added.
