GENERAL MACARTHUR, Eastern Samar - On Thursday, July 25, a clash between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and a team of New People’s Army (NPA) fighters resulted in the death of Joel Guarino, alias Duran, the squad leader of the recently dismantled Apoy Platoon of the NPA.

Members of the AFP were conducting a development and security operation in the highlands of General MacArthur when they encountered the NPA fighters, leading to a 20-minute firefight.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported among the government troops. Although some rebels managed to escape, the Philippine Army's 78th Infantry Battalion (78IB) recovered the body of the fallen fighter.

The Apoy Platoon had been dismantled by government forces earlier this year, leaving only 15 members still evading capture.

Brig. Gen. Noel Vestuir, commander of the Army's 802nd Infantry Brigade, stated, "The neutralization of Guarino left the remnants of the newly dismantled platoon leaderless and without direction. Now, they have become just a roving band of bandits, hiding in the mountains to survive."

Community Involvement

Army officials acknowledged the critical role local communities have played in the AFP's recent successes.

Over the past few months, several villages in Samar, previously known as NPA strongholds, have taken a stand against the rebel groups.

No longer fearful of harassment, local residents are now serving as the eyes and ears of the government, aiding in efforts to combat the insurgents.
