Regional filmmaking is one of the ways to promote local talents in the art of moviemaking.
That is why the government agencies in charge of the development of domestic film industry like the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and some other public estates are encouraging Filipino filmmakers to support homegrown creatives and technical people.
Although there are other ways to skin the cat.
One of them is solo, independent production like what DJ Marco, a new director from Dumaguete City, has done with his film “Warrior Kids in the Magical World,” a project of TFP Film Production.
“Warrior Kids in the Magical World” is about Jimmy (Chris Stephen)—a citizen of Bakane kingdom—who saves the environment which is threatened with annihilation by Dr. Zem (Christian Quitoy).
TFP has also another film project in the pipeline which is about the captivity, torture, survival and freedom of Luisa Galvez from her captors in Mindanao.
“The Luisa Galvez Story” is also directed by DJ, a Dumaguete City resident and a former mainstay of the late German Moreno’s “That’s Entertainment.”
Marco’s screen as an actor was Jake Romero.
Anyway, the enterprising, young director has also conceptualized another film project, “Obra” headlined by sisters Zien and Crizia Gajunera Macasiljig.
“Obra” is about a dream being pursued by two talented artists who wouldn’t stop at anything until they have achieved stardom.
All three films were shot in Dumaguete.
“I am proud of my city. That is why I use it as the backdrop of my films,” said DJ.
