Disasters such as earthquakes can happen anytime - so the important thing is that people are prepared to protect themselves whenever and wherever it occurs.
That was the message of the city government of San Pedro, Laguna as it joined the country in taking part during the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) last September 11.
At exactly 4:00 in the afternoon, at the sound of the buzzer and the sirens, employees of various departments inside the San Pedro City Hall, as well as students and teachers in various public and private schools and participating private establishments, immediately assumed the "duck, cover and hold" position for a minute.
After the minute-long siren, participating employees and students immediately evacuated their premises, simulating the necessary evacuation procedures after earthquakes.
Meanwhile, staff of the San Pedro City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) also participated in simulated rescue operations to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge needed to respond to emergency situations.
The drill, organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) pursuant to Memorandum No. 27, s. 2025, is conducted quarterly to enhance preparedness and evaluate response protocols in the event of a major earthquake.
The NSED serves as a continuing effort to strengthen disaster resilience and ensure coordinated action across all sectors of society.
