The community in Barangay Palanog has officially achieved full flood protection with the completion of the second phase of a flood control structure along its waterway.
This project, initiated by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Tacloban City District Engineering Office (TCDEO), reached completion on October 17, 2024.
Valued at ₱96.4 million and funded through the 2024 General Appropriations Act, the project aims to improve flood management and reduce damages from extreme weather events.
By reinforcing the area's flood defenses, the structure is set to protect homes, properties, and livelihoods from ongoing threats posed by heavy rainfall and typhoons.
The flood control structure extends for 582 lineal meters and consists of a robust revetment made of stone masonry, complemented by concrete facing to withstand strong water currents during adverse weather.
District Engineer Rebecca G. Yuse emphasized the project's importance, asserting that this control structure offers long-term security to Barangay Palanog.
Yuse added that it not only ensures the safety of residents but also aids in safeguarding their means of livelihood, particularly during inclement weather.
She concluded by stating that initiatives like this reflect the government's commitment to fostering resilient and prepared communities.
With these advancements in flood control, Barangay Palanog now stands better equipped to face the challenges of nature, ultimately improving the quality of life for its inhabitants.
The completion of this phase marks a significant step forward in disaster preparedness and response efforts in the region.
It showcases the vital role of infrastructure in promoting safety and sustainability in the face of climate change.
As such, this initiative is a testament to the ongoing efforts to invest in community resilience against potential flooding and other weather-related threats.
