The Department of Transportation's main office is moving back to Manila after being moved to Pampanga five years ago by former secretary Art Tugade.

Former Transportation Secretary Art Tugade moved the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) main office to the Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga five years ago, but the move is going to be reversed.

Inquirer Biz Buzz column said the decision to relocate back to Manila was motivated by the findings of a recent survey that current Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista's office had conducted among the staff of the agency.

Based on the survey, 70 percent of DoTr employees wanted the head office to return to NCR, only 10 percent wanted it to stay in Clark because they already relocated to the area or were from there, and another 20 percent were okay with either location.

Bautista said 70 percent is a huge majority to ignore.

DOTr is currently spending a substantial sum of money shuttling employees from Manila to and from Pampanga everyday, with most of them leaving their home before sunrise and returning after sunset.

Though the department still owns a few floors at their old office building in Columbia Tower along Ortigas Avenue, but when the move back to the capital would entail relocating to the brand-new Primex Tower at the intersection of Edsa and Connecticut Street in San Juan City's Greenhills neighborhood. That skyscraper, which is 50 floors tall and is currently nearing completion, is the tallest in the area.

This is a good news for employees and also to people wanting to transact business with DoTr as they won’t have to travel all the way to Pampanga anymore.

It is also good news for Sec. Bautista because the Office of the Secretary is currently squatting in the head office of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) complex.
