The growth of homestays is becoming a notable trend in the Philippines, especially in rural and island regions where traditional hotels are scarce.

These homestays offer a more affordable lodging option, often providing visitors with a genuine local experience.

However, homestay operators frequently face challenges in providing comfortable accommodations due to their limited resources.

To support the burgeoning tourism in Biliran province, known for attracting cruise ship visitors, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has stepped in to assist homestay owners with essential "homestay kits."

A total of 29 operators received these kits, with 18 beneficiaries from Higatangan Island in Naval and 11 from Maripipi Island.

These recipients had all undergone a comprehensive seven-day training program conducted by the DOT earlier this year.

Included in the homestay kits are supplies such as towels, linens, pillows, and blankets meant to enhance the guest experience.

Florida Enero from Higatangan Island expressed her gratitude to the DOT for the support, emphasizing how it would enhance the services she offers in her new homestay business.

Enero noted that the assistance would help ensure that their accommodations are tidy and meet quality expectations.

Judith Gaviola from Maripipi, who has been providing homestay accommodations since her retirement in 2016, also conveyed her appreciation for the new kits.

Gaviola highlighted that her previous linens were worn out, making the new supplies essential for making her rooms more appealing to guests.

Both towns, Higatangan and Maripipi, are emerging as popular tourist destinations, further cementing their status with recent visits from cruise ships.

Higatangan is particularly famous for its shifting sandbar, while Maripipi is renowned for the scenic Sambawan Island.

The Australian cruise ship MV Coral Geographer recently made a stop at Higatangan Island, allowing its 40 guests to engage in a unique cultural experience.

Overall, the DOT's initiative is expected to elevate the standard of homestay accommodations in Biliran, supporting local operators and enhancing the tourism sector in these picturesque locations.

Thus, as more visitors discover the charms of these islands, the potential for the homestay business will continue to grow, benefiting both operators and tourists alike.
