How can the Philippine government protect the public from cyberattacks if its own systems fall victim to hacking?
That was the question posed by cybersecurity experts following another hacking incident affecting the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
According to DOST officials, hackers successfully infiltrated the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) website last Thursday, April 26.
Enrico Paringit, DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director, confirmed the breach, prompting the shutdown of their website and IT systems for assessment and maintenance.
The DOST issued advisories on social media, warning users about the affected systems' unavailability from April 26 to May 2.
The agency apologized for any inconvenience caused by the shutdown.
Paringit expressed dismay over the hacker's taunting post on Facebook by HulkSec Philippines, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity measures.
Despite the attack, DOST cybersecurity experts are actively working to regain control of their website and systems.
This incident follows a similar breach earlier this month, affecting three DOST websites.
