DOLE and the Muntinlupa LGU gave fishermen boats and equipment worth P1.7 million as part of the Bangka Project.

The Department of Labor and Equipment (DOLE) and the Muntinlupa government turned over boats and equipment worth P1.7 million to help fishermen in their livelihood.

The fishermen from Muntinlupa received 16 boats from DOLE and Muntinlupa LGU: 8 of them are 30-foot fiberglass boats with 16 HP marine engines each and the other eight are 23-foot fiberglass boats with 7.5 HP marine engines each. They also received 24 life jackets and 40 raincoats, the Manila Bulletin reported.

The boats and equipment that were given to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Councils (FARMCs) in different barangays of Muntinlupa are part of the “Bangka Project” under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP).

Each FARMC also got a package of P215,400.62 as additional ayuda.

“Bangka Project” was an initiative of the Muntinlupa Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in coordination with Muntinlupa’s Lake Management Office (LMO). This project aims to help the FARMCs’ source of income. The creation of FARMCs in barangays, cities, and municipalities was mandated under the Executive Order No. 240 issued in 1995 by late President Fidel V. Ramos.

Under that order, FARMCs are organized “to institutionalize the major role of the local fisherfolks and other resource users in the community-based planning and implementation of policies and programs for the management, conservation, development and protection of fisheries and aquatic resources of the municipal waters as defined by the Local Government Code.”

DOLE Undersecretary Atty. Benjo Santos Benavides, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon, and Rep. Jaime Fresnedi led the awarding ceremony in Barangay Bayanan Baywalk.

DOLE National Capital Region Director Sarah Buena Mirasol, DOLE MUNTAPARLAS Field Office Director Leonides Castillon Jr., PESO Muntinlupa Manager Glenda Zamora-Aniñon, LMO head Hermie Dela Cruz, Vice Mayor Temy Simundac, Councilor Paty Katy Boncayao, Councilor Eliot Martinez, Councilor Ivee Arciaga and Philippine National Police Maritime Regional Unit officials also graced the turnover ceremony
