NEW WASHINGTON, Aklan — The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) has been closely monitoring the effects of the recent oil spill here, emphasizing the importance of swift action to mitigate health risks and support affected communities.

The oil leak, originating from Barge 102 at the Metallica shipyard on May 26, 2024, has had significant repercussions on the fishing communities along Lagatik River, particularly in Districts 1, 2, and 3 of Pinamuk-an.

In response, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has spearheaded containment and cleanup efforts, with DOH Western Visayas conducting rapid environmental assessments to address health concerns.

Collaborative Efforts

DOH-Western Visayas, through its Health Emergency Management Staff (HEMS), provided essential resources to support affected residents, including peak flow meters, Go bags, water purification tablets, health kits, gloves, and water testing kits.

Collaborative meetings between DOH officials, New Washington Mayor Jessica Panambo, and Municipal Health Officer Daystar Sedillo ensured coordinated medical interventions and strategies to mitigate the spill's impacts.

Mayor Panambo's decision to lift the suspension of fishing activities in affected areas, following assessments by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office and the installation of spill booms, reflects a concerted effort to restore normalcy while prioritizing safety.

Water Quality

Environment authorities confirmed that water quality has returned to safe levels for fishing activities, providing reassurance to local fisherfolk.

The coordinated response from government agencies and local authorities underscores the commitment to safeguarding public health and supporting affected communities in times of crisis.

As the cleanup efforts continue and the community rebuilds, ongoing collaboration and vigilance will be crucial in addressing the lingering effects of the oil spill and ensuring the well-being of residents in the area.
