Rep. Gardiola asked MWS Ople to inform the Congress of the $532 million gift from KSA.

Rep. Edwin Gardiola, CWS Partylist, asked Secretary Susan Ople of the Department of Migrant Workers, to inform Congress about how the $532 -million gift from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) would be spent.

“I kindly ask Migrant Workers Secretary Ople to please formally inform Congress on the details of the $532 million dollar gift from the KSA to some 10,000 Filipino laborers who were laid off by Saudi construction firms because of the economic crisis there in 2015,” Gardiola said.

He said that they must make sure that there’s no need for congress inquiries or hearings.

“There is no need for any congressional inquiry or hearing yet; however, we must ensure that there is no graft and corruption in how the compensation package will be implemented and disbursed,” he continued.
“For now, detailed official reports will do. We have to know how the $532M will be distributed, how much each worker will get, and when they will receive it. We have to know the eligibility criteria, the verification process, and the safeguards against the inclusion of names of ineligible individuals,” he explained.

The congress also wants to know if some of the $532 million would be distributed to recruitment and deployment organizations or if it will all go directly to the construction employees who were laid off.

“We also want to know whether all of the $532M will directly go to the laid-off construction workers or if some would be disbursed to recruitment and deployment agencies,” he added.

Congress and the public should know all these details.
