Filipino tourists may soon get to experience first-hand the charming, dynamic culture of India.

This, as its flag carrier, Air India, have started discussions with Philippine government officials regarding the possibility of establishing direct flights between the Philippines and India.

The meeting, held at the central office of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) in Pasay City on Tuesday, February 18, "marked a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations and improving air connectivity between the two nations."

In the meeting, CAAP officials explained the necessary paperwork, technical details, and procedural guidelines needed to obtain permission for flights.

They also discussed important points such as planned routes, flight schedules, and logistical aspects to streamline the approval process.

CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo reaffirmed the agency's commitment to facilitating the flight approval process while maintaining rigorous safety and operational standards.

According to CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio, both parties expressed optimism regarding the economic and cultural benefits of direct air links, highlighting the potential for increased passenger demand and expanded business opportunities between the Philippines and India.

The Philippines has been implementing initiatives to boost tourism from India in response to a decrease in Chinese visitors.

In 2024, approximately 79,000 Indians traveled to the Philippines, showing a 12 percent growth from the previous year.

Several years ago, Philippine Airlines introduced direct flights between Manila and New Delhi.

However, the flag carrier has ceased its service to India, reportedly because of increasing passenger worries about the tension along the India-Pakistan border in 2019.
