Catbalogan City, Samar – The Diocese of Borongan has voiced its strong support for five community leaders from Barangay Casuguran and Carmi Macapagao, president of HEARD (Homonhon Environmental Advocates and Rights Defenders), who are currently facing an injunction case filed by Emir Mineral Resources Corporation (EMRC).
In a statement released by the Diocese, the Church emphasized that those being accused are not criminals but defenders of the environment, standing at the frontlines in the fight to protect Homonhon’s natural resources.
“They are caretakers of the environment, protectors of life, and voices of the voiceless,” the Diocese stated.
Protecting the Land, Facing the Court
The case revolves around Area 12 in Homonhon—an ecologically sensitive site vital to the island’s water supply and biodiversity. It’s also a livelihood source for many residents. The accused have long been opposing the operations of EMRC in the area, arguing that mining activities threaten the island’s delicate balance.
EMRC claims that the environmental defenders are obstructing their legal operations, prompting the company to file an injunction now pending in court.
Not Just Legal—But Moral
The Diocese stressed that its support is not simply institutional, but rooted in moral and spiritual responsibility. Their concern goes beyond church affiliation—it is about standing with those who protect creation, even when faced with intimidation.
“To use the law to silence those who protect the environment is a grave injustice,” the Church added in its statement.
Church leaders are also calling on the public and people of faith to stand in solidarity, resist oppression, and pray for justice to prevail.
Hope Amid Pressure
Despite legal pressure, the defenders remain hopeful for a fair trial. Support continues to pour in from Casuguran residents, advocacy groups, and the wider Church community.
“May justice prevail. May creation be respected. May courage continue to rise in the face of fear,” the Diocese concluded.
