"Each of us have been called upon to be heroes in our own rights in fighting for our survival and devoting ourselves to the common good just as our heroes did more than a century ago," President Rodrigo Duterte said as the Philippines celebrates Independence Day under the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic.

AS the country celebrates its 123rd Independence Day on Saturday, President Rodrigo Duterte urged Filipinos to emulate those who struggled to achieve the country's independence even as the Philippines continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The challenges of the past years have tested our character as a nation. Each of us have been called upon to be heroes in our own rights in fighting for our survival and devoting ourselves to the common good just as our heroes did more than a century ago,” the president said in a pre-taped message aired at the flag -and wreath-laying ceremony at Luneta Park (Rizal Park).
“With their noble example inspiring us, we look forward to a brighter future filled with hope that we will overcome the challenges brought by this pandemic. May the patriotic fervor continue to burn in our hearts. Mabuhay ang malayang Pilipinas,” he added.

U.S. sends greetings

Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden took to social media to greet the Philippines and at the same time called for continued joint efforts amid the pandemic and regional tensions.

"To all the people of the Philippines, Happy Independence Day! It’s my honor as President to send best wishes and the enduring friendship of the American people as you celebrate this joyous occasion," Biden said in a video message from the White House shared by the US Embassy in the Philippines.
"This year our nations are also celebrating two momentous anniversaries: our 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of our strong alliance," he said.
“The Philippines and United States share so much history, and our people are forever connected to our deep bonds and shared sacrifices and valor, of family, and of friendship," Biden added.

Since taking office last January, Biden has taken steps to strengthen relationships between the two countries, especially in the face of the looming conflict between China and Western powers in the West Philippine Sea.

Malacanang Palace earlier said Biden has expressed his desire to meet President Duterte at the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Brunei this October. (ONT)
