DICT empowers IP youth through digital literacy training to advance their level of computer proficiency.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), launched the digital literacy training for the Aeta community in Porac, Pampanga last July 18 until July 22.

The five-day community-based digital training aided a total of 35 indigenous youth of Barangay Inararo in Porac, Pampanga.

“[The digital literacy training] seeks to provide a basic course on computer and internet essentials, computer hardware, networking and troubleshooting, document processing, electronic spreadsheet, as well as multimedia presentation,” said DICT in a Facebook post.

DICT Pampanga head Edriel Miranda said that the training for the indigenous people (IP) will allow them to advance their level of computer proficiency which will help them in the ever-changing course of technology in society.

The department brought essential equipment for the trainees to use and practice on to ensure the provision of a “hands-on learning” experience. DICT believes that by conquering the gap of the so-called “digital divide”, the IP youth would be proficient in the use of technology to help them find decent jobs in the future and be productive members of their communities.

The digital literacy training comes following the establishment of the Technology Empowerment for Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development Center in Porac last May 17.

The center is created by the government to provide a venue for studying, working, and availing online services in digitally underserved and unserved areas of the country. This enables the IPs to access various information and communications technology as well as government services.

Miranda said that they are also planning to do the same training for IP cooperatives from ancestral domains in the province.
