The Department of Education (DepEd) and governors from across the Philippines have sealed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to fast-track the building of new classrooms nationwide as part of efforts to address the shortage of learning spaces under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. himself led the MOA signing ceremony at Malacañang Palace, alongside DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, local government unit officials, and representatives from the Senate and House of Representatives.
Under this agreement, local government units (LGUs) will take on the responsibility of overseeing DepEd funds. The long-term goal of these funds is to build, upgrade, and maintain safe and high-quality classrooms. The 2026 National Budget provides the financial backing for this effort, aiming to accelerate the process of addressing the country's classroom deficit.
Leading the signatories were Governor Dax Cua of Quirino (Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines) and Governor Reynaldo Sucayan Tamayo Jr. of South Cotabato (League of Provinces of the Philippines).
Senator Bam Aquino, Congressman Roman Romulo, Congresswoman Maricar Zamora-Mabanglo, and Congresswoman Florabel Yatco also witnessed the historic signing.
Quezon Governor Angelina "Doktora Helen" Tan, who also attended the signing ceremonies, expressed her support for the program.
"I am happy to see our teachers from Sariaya, Candelaria, Tiaong, and Dolores who witnessed the signing. Thank you, Mr. President and Sec. Sonny, for recognizing the role of LGUs in addressing education facility gaps in the country," Tan said in a statement.
