As the specter of El Niño looms over Antique province, the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) issues a stark warning to the public: brace yourselves for a potential surge in dengue cases. Irene Duldoco, the IPHO information officer, sounds the alarm, citing a concerning uptick in dengue cases during the early months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. With 59 cases already recorded, an 11 percent increase from the previous year, the threat of dengue casts a shadow over communities grappling with the adverse effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

The confluence of factors exacerbated by El Niño poses a grave challenge to public health in Antique. As households stockpile water to endure the parched landscape, inadvertently creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the risk of dengue transmission escalates. Duldoco's admonition underscores the critical importance of proactive measures in mitigating the spread of the deadly virus. Covering water containers, conducting regular inspections for potential breeding sites, and adhering to the 5S strategy against dengue are imperative steps in safeguarding against the looming threat.

The 5S strategy—a cornerstone of dengue prevention—advocates for a comprehensive approach encompassing search and destroy missions, self-protection measures, early consultation, targeted fogging, spraying, and sustained hydration. In the face of intensifying heat waves exacerbated by El Niño, the IPHO's recommendation to increase daily water intake underscores the paramount importance of hydration in combating heat-related illnesses.

Yet, dengue is not the sole adversary unleashed by El Niño's fury. The IPHO's vigilance extends to a spectrum of maladies—from diarrhea and food poisoning to asthma, sunburn, and heat stroke—each a menacing manifestation of the climatic upheaval. As temperatures soar and parched landscapes beckon dehydration and sunburn, communities are urged to exercise caution, employ sunscreen, seek shade, and embrace prudent sun protection practices.

Amidst the throes of El Niño, the IPHO unveils its El Niño Mitigation and Preparedness Plan—a blueprint for resilience aimed at fortifying the province's defenses against the ravages of climate change. From risk assessments and geo-tagging initiatives to the promotion of handwashing and safe food preparation, the plan epitomizes a holistic approach to disaster preparedness and public health resilience.
