Davao City officially launched its World Leprosy Month celebrations on Sunday, January 26, continuing through February, to raise awareness and provide education about the disease.

Dr. Donna May Sarenas and Dr. Silvino Rey Pino of the Department of Dermatology at Southern Philippines Medical Center shared the news during Monday's Kapehan sa PIA Healthy Davao Media Forum.

"World Leprosy Month is a global initiative, and we’re hosting a series of seminars focusing on leprosy treatments, prevention, and in-person consultations with patients. We want to educate people that leprosy is not as contagious as often believed and teach how to properly treat those affected," Dr. Sarenas explained.

Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves.

If untreated, it can result in permanent disabilities. Currently, 35 patients from Southern Mindanao are receiving treatment for the condition.

On February 6, additional seminars will take place, alongside consultations and discussions addressing the stigma and depression that many leprosy patients face due to being ostracized.

"We encourage everyone to join us in these seminars. We’re here to eradicate leprosy and ensure effective treatment. Leprosy is curable, and the World Health Organization offers accessible treatment," Dr. Sarenas emphasized.
