The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 4-A (DA-RFO 4-A) recently introduced 15 new varieties of palay in its recent preferential analysis of DA- RFO 4-A Lipa Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (LARES).

These varieties are considered 'irrigated inbred' and 'special purpose' that will be resilient during the dry season and destructive weather conditions in the country, as part of the NextGen Plus: Market-Driven Project of DA-RFO 4-A.

The irrigated inbred are NSIC RC: 580, 622, 624, 626, 634, 216, 222, mestiso 73, mestiso 99, and Special Purpose: NSIC RC: 218, 342, 344, 128 and 216.

These varietiesare suitable for the Philippineswhich experiences an average of 30-32 degree Celsius temperature during summer and is vulnerable to 19-20 cyclones annually, according to World Bank.

The agriculture department also looks at promoting the innovative integration of paddy field and fishery that may simultaneously or alternately produce palay and breed fish in a year on the same field.

Some of the fishes that can thrive in rice field include milkfish, tilapia or carp fish.

Integrated rice-fish system is also practiced in other Asian countries like China.
