Government agents foiled an attempted smuggling of different currencies at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, the PNP-Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup) said Thursday, June 26.
Aviation police reported that airport officials confiscated over one million pesos and 580,000 US dollars from a Filipino passenger departing for Hong Kong on June 25.
The undeclared amount of money was found in the traveler's luggage during a regular security check, after the Bureau of Customs (BoC) conducted an x-ray scanning check.
The passenger, who was not identified, was immediately apprehended by Aviation police "during standard operating procedures" after a manual inspection was done.
The seized currency is currently being held by the BoC for serial number identification, and the passenger is also in the bureau's custody for further investigation.
Avsegroup chief P/BGen Jason L. Capoy said that the accomplishment highlights the importance of inter-agency coordination among airport authorities.
