It's not just money that's prohibited to be given away during campaign events.
With the campaign season for local positions for the May 12 midterm elections now underway, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reiterated its warning against distributing cash or valuable rewards at events.
“Candidates can participate in contests or events, but they are prohibited from giving out valuable gifts,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia emphasized.
Garcia cautioned that handing out cash or valuables could be considered a form of vote buying.
“We hope candidates refrain from such practices,” he added.
Voter information sheets
Meanwhile, Comelec has started distributing voter information sheets (VIS) to over 68 million registered voters nationwide. Thousands of casual employees were hired to ensure delivery, even in remote areas.
The election body aims to complete the distribution of 68,542,564 VIS by the end of April.
Garcia advised voters to bring their VIS on election day instead of sample ballots from candidates or political parties.
The VIS contains essential information, including the list of candidates and polling precinct locations.
Comelec officials, led by Garcia, launched the distribution drive in Pasay.
He acknowledged the challenge of ensuring VIS reaches the correct voters at their registered addresses.
Additionally, two weeks before the election, voters will have access to a precinct finder to help them locate their designated polling stations more easily.
