Rain or Shine will once again utilize the service of Yeng Guiao as they tap the tactician as their head coach for the upcoming PBA conference.
A homecoming is set to happen as coach Yeng Guiao is back at the helm of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters following his signing of a 3-year contract in RoS’ headquarters in Pasig today.
The franchise announced the news on its social media accounts, welcoming the mentor who called the shots for Rain or Shine from 2011 to 2016.
RoS also had six finals appearances that resulted in a pair of championships in the 2012 Governors’ Cup and 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.
“Coach Yeng Guiao was the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters' Head Coach from 2011 to 2016. He led the team to 6 Finals appearances and 2 Championships; the 2012 Governor's Cup and the 2016 Commissioner's Cup,” the team said in a Facebook post.
“Now, he returns to coach a new generation of Elasto Painters. Only Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga, and Jewel Ponferrada remain from the ROS team Coach Yeng coached.”
The 63-year-old tactician left the NLEX Road Warriors after he admitted to being offered a high-paying corporate job instead of the head coach role for the next conference.
He went to the RoS office in Pasig to seal the deal with the people he considered as family.
Team co-owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que immediately made all the necessary steps to place an offer for Guiao and upon arriving from overseas on Saturday, Yu placed a call on Guiao and began negotiating.
Guiao will take over Chris Gavina’s post as the latter looks forward to working alongside the decorated tactician as he moves to the role of an assistant coach.
“Coach Chris will be part of the coaching staff, while Caloy will be activated again as coach,” said Yu.
“He (Garcia) will be the first assistant. Siyempre anak ni coach yan. Anak na mestizo,” he also added as Caloy Garcia returns as one of Guiao’s deputies, previously serving as head of basketball operations of the team.
