Assistant coach Chris Gavina of Rain or Shine left for Taipei after being tapped as the head coach for the Taichung Suns.

Even coaches are heading overseas as Chris Gavina signed with Taichung Suns in Taiwan League.

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ assistant coach Gavina has left to take over the head coaching position for the Taichung Suns in the T1 League in Taiwan as announced last October 9.

The announcement was made by RoS in the social media accounts hours after their game against the San Miguel Beermen in the 2022-23 PBA Commissioner’s Cup ended with a loss, 111-93.

“The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters would like to thank coach Chris Gavina for everything he has done for the team,” the team wrote.
“We wish him all the best in his next coaching stint.”

Gavina has been a part of the Elasto Painters’ coaching staff since 2018 and took over the head post last year for a total of three conferences at the helm.

The team struggled to play its potential under Gavina’s wing as they failed to reach the playoffs of the Governors’ Cup last season and the Philippine Cup this year, with a 13-22 elimination round record.

He then moved back as an assistant coach after the Elasto Painters decided to bring back coach Yeng Guiao, when the latter did not sign a new contract with the NLEX Road Warriors.

The 43-year-old tactician will then replace Alberto Garcia, who was only signed by Taichung after the season, and will call the shots for the Taichung squad that reached the finals of the inaugural T1 League season.

The Suns previously had Filipino-Australian Jordan Heading in their roster before he headed to the B. League by signing with the Nagasaki Velca after one season in Chinese Taipei.

Gavina will then work with PBA veteran KG Canaleta and their import Tony Bishop who is quite familiar with Filipino basketball as he played for the Meralco Bolts in the 2021 PBA Governor’s Cup.
