Regional filmmaking is alive and well in Cavite Province, one of the geo-political components of CALABARZON Region.
Late last week, the Cine Caviteno, founded by Prof. Ahnnie Sarile of the Film Division of the Communication Arts Department of the De La Salle University in Dasmarinas City, Cavite, had presented to the public its interim set of officers headed by ----.
According to Sarile, Cine Caviteno has just taken off to explore the possibilities of coming out with a series of events that would include a film festival.
“Pangako ko ito kay Teddy Co, ‘yong leading film archivist, kaya lang, nakakalungkot, namatay na siya. Ang sabi niya sa akin noon, ‘Ahnnie, kailangang simulan mo ang paggawa ng pelikula sa Cavite’. Kaya gayon, ginagawa ko ito. Maraming mga pagsubok pero gagawin para sa Cavite at kay (This I promised to Teddy Co, who sadly, passed away. When he was still alive, Teddy told me, ‘You have to start filmmaking in Cavite. That’s why I am doing it now. There are a lot of challenges but I will do it for my province and for) Teddy,” informed Ahnnie.
A year or so from now, Sarile sees the realization of her dream with the help of institutions like DLSU, Cavite Tourism Office and other benevolent agencies.
Prof. Sol Valera, Dean of the DLSU-Dasmarinas Communication Arts Department, is very supportive of Ahnnie’s projects.
Aside from Cine Caviteno, Cavite Cinemakers Society headed by cinematographer Paolo Emmanuel Magsino is also flexing muscles to enliven local filmmaking in the province.
“Marami pong proyekto sa paggawa ng pelikula ang grupo namin (Our group has many projects in filmmaking),” said Paolo when he lectured on cinematography at the DLSU-Dasmarinas.
“Gusto ko pong makatulong sa mga kabataan sa paggawa ng pelikula (I want to support the youth in filmmaking),” he added.
Magsino, the Director of Photography of movies like “Nelia,” “Mamasapano,” to name only a few, was helpful in teaching the practicality of cinematography like using available lighting such as sun to enhance the emotion of the images,
At the moment, Cine Caviteno and Cavite Cinemakers Society are collaborating to make Cavite one of the central filmmaking regions in the country.
Magsino was elected unanimously by his peers to lead the organization.
In his Facebook wall, Paolo expressed his gratitude to the group in support of his causes. “It’s an honor to be elected as the President of Cavite Cinemakers Society. We are committed to building programs that will support filmmakers, nurture new talent, and strengthen the film industry here in Cavite. Excited kami to work with the community and create opportunities that will help our local creatives grow!” he notes.
